Program Notes

Adagio for Winds and Organ was the first piece I ever composed for wind band. It was written to honor Ray Lichtenwalter the retiring director of bands at the University of Texas at Arlington. I had the privilege to work under Mr. Lichtenwalter during my undergraduate years and knew he was one of the greats in the wind band world. Much of the composing of this work took place while we were preparing his final concert at the Myerson Symphony Center in Dallas. I even remember putting notes down on the bus ride over there. One of the key elements of that symphony hall is the massive Lay Family Organ, an instrument that features prominently in this work.

The work is in one continuous movement of just under 20 minutes in length. It is styled in the form of a Brucknerian adagio with swells and climaxes only to fade away into nothing. It is an exercise in late 19th Century chromaticism. Passages of full force are juxtaposed against delicate chamber sections for only a handful of soloists.

The work is appropriate for an advanced high school or college level band.

The work is one of my more conservative works in terms of scoring for band. The work does not make use of percussion of any kind. It is designed to be played by a wind ensemble of a single player per part, but sections like the B-flat Clarinets and C Flutes may be performed with multiple players per part.
